Sandspur Island — nicknamed Raccoon Island — is a small mangrove island in Biscayne Bay home to a colony of extremely social raccoons who wade out to meet arriving boats.
How to visit
You can only get there by boat. We anchor in the shallows and wade ashore. Bring shoes you don't mind getting wet.
Are the raccoons safe?
They're wild but habituated and generally chill. Don't corner them, don't hand-feed from your palm (they nip fingers by accident), and don't bring dogs.
What to bring
A GoPro or waterproof phone case. The photos of raccoons on paddleboards are worth the trip alone.
